September 21st Newsletter

Last week and a half of homework training at school: The kids are doing better each week. I think they will be ready to make this transition to doing homework at home, come October. Establishing these work study habits will help them all the way through school. It is worth it!

Homophones: words that sound alike but are spelled differently and have a different meaning are the hardest spelling words. If your child has them in their spelling list, be sure that they practice them with a sentence. Context is the key!

Rocket Math homework is beginning for those who need extra practice on math facts. Just one section per day, not the whole thing.

Double 9 Dominos We could use more sets of dominos to practice our number sense. Best Practices in math learning are those in which the child is actively involved and feels “safe” to practice. Games that use math are a great way to build number sense. They’re fun, quick and your child is actively involved.

Art Contest: this is optional but if your child chooses, he/she may complete the release form and tape to the completed art project. I will be sending these on October 9. Please follow the directions or I cannot mail your child’s work. If he/she chooses to do this, they may have a “free homework pass for 2 days”. Just note in their daily planner on those days that they were working on the Art Contest and I will excuse the regular homework.

Friday Reflections: Beginning this Friday, your child will be reflecting on the past week and recording this on a “Friday Reflections” sheet. Attached to this will be work/tests they have done in class. This is so that you can review their work and see how they are being graded. This is to be signed by you and your child then returned on Monday. This also gives you and I another way to communicate any needs, comments or questions.

Thank you for all your support,

Making a Homework Plan: This month we will continue doing most of our homework in school. We are still in training. Great job of bringing binders to school each day! We’ve only had a couple kids forget. It is difficult when they don’t have their binder at school. We use it everyday.

  1. Make a homework plan: a quiet time, a place without distractions and supplies. After school or after dinner sometimes works well.

  2. Your child should read each night for 15 minutes, fill in the reading log and ask you to sign it. They may read, you may read to them or they may listen to books on tape. If they read without you, ask them to tell about what they read. This helps their comprehension.

  3. They are also to show you their planner and explain to you what homework we did in class. You are to sign their planner each night. Keep the M4T, Core Spelling Words and their Reading Log in their binder as we will need them every day at school. They will receive a reward on Friday for getting those signatures. If something comes up, you may catch up the next night or write me a note. We are working hard on establishing good study habits.

Back-To-School Night: This is really only for 4th and 5th graders and their parents. We had the 3rd grade Open House on the Monday before school started. If you and your child would like to come to meet the specialist teachers that he/she has for music, P.E., computer and library, you are very welcome. If you were not able to come to meet me during the 3rd grade Open House, I am available. Just call or write a note and we can set up a time.

Call me if you have questions or comments.

Relatives: Oh my, the relatives came last Friday! Our third graders were all practicing their best assembly behavior. You never have seen such big eyes! And the relatives kept pouring into the gym, bringing snacks, books and blankets to sit on. Our gym was full of relatives and third graders. It was a sight to behold! Each third grader was allowed to choose a free book (from a literacy grant). Thank you, relatives!

The Presidential Address to the Students of America: As I did not get the parent notice out in time (all those Relatives coming distracted me!), I plan to show it later this week on Thursday or Friday. I plan to connect it to each child’s own school goals and responsibilities. If you have any questions, please call or e-mail.

Book orders: Scholastic book orders come out once a month. It is a great source to get inexpensive books for your child. Anything that encourages them to read is helpful. You know the 10 best ways for your child to be a better reader? Read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read! Please return the form by the due date. No cash, please. You can write one check to Scholastic and order from any of the forms.

Homework: Lots of students are getting their binders signed each night: good job! Some still do not seem to be getting the idea. Please make a homework plan with your child: a time and a place to show you their binder, the homework we did in class and give you important papers. We are continuing to do homework at school this month for training purposes. I want your child to be as independent as possible when he/she starts doing this at home in October.

Call me if you have questions or comments.
